Patient Stories : Mabel
Mabel was raised by a single mother but found herself alone and isolated as she lost 12 of her family members, including her Mother, during the devastating Ebola outbreak. After falling pregnant with her first child she wanted to illegally abort it, but she came to the Aberdeen Women’s Centre after hearing about it through a friend. She was counseled and joined the Dream Girls class and quickly made friends and became very popular. She safely delivered a little girl at the hospital and was recruited to the Girls’ Hostel program.
During her time at the Hostel, Mabel was one of the standout girls, always trying her best and learning fast. Mabel has recently finished her three-month internship at Hotel Barmoi, arranged by AWC, where she gained experience in waitressing, customer service, preparing food, cleaning rooms and reception duties. Mabel received a certificate and glowing reference from Hotel Barmoi on completion of her placement and is now looking for a job in the hotel sector in Freetown.
“The Dream Girls and Hostel program helped to turn my life around. I will forever be grateful to the Aberdeen Women’s Centre. I loved waitressing because I get to talk to the customers and meet new people”
