Patient Stories: Lucia

Lucia

Lucia (25) got married at the age of 20. She had dropped out of school as she was unable to pay her school fees.

Lucia fell pregnant and was immediately rushed to the local hospital when she went into labor. Due to the baby's size she was unable to deliver naturally and the doctors proceeded to operate. Devastatingly it was too late to save her baby and two days later after being discharged Lucia noticed she was leaking urine.

Lucia suffered for 6 months with obstetric fistula before doctors referred her to our Fistula Care Centre in Malawi. In January 2022 we operated and Lucia is now fistula free and enjoying life!

During her stay at the centre, Lucia attended our educational classes, liking in particular the arts and crafts sessions. She now knits and crochets for the women in her village and has made Mk8,000, using the money to buy potato seed for her garden. Lucia plans to sell the potatoes for a profit so she can build a nice house for her family.

After being cured and discharged Lucia told us she felt so alive and happy and could not believe she was fistula free.

“I am grateful.  I have been at the fistula care centre for a month and I was well cared by the staff”
