Zarasoa

ZARASOA (18) is a young mother from Mananjary, who suffered an obstetric fistula following the delivery of her 2nd child in August 2021.

After hours of labor Zarasoa was devastated to lose her baby and discover that she had been left with a fistula. In addition to coping with her loss, Zarasoa felt shame about her injury, she was leaking urine, had begun to smell and people were avoiding her. She had never heard of anyone else with this injury and felt alone.

A doctor in Mananjary referred Zarasoa to the Fistula Care Centre. Zarasoa arrived in December 2021 for treatment and found she was no longer alone. She had surgery a few days after her arrival at the clinic which went well.

She was happy during her stay as she said "the nurses and all the staff were very kind and took great care of me."

Zarasoa has now returned home, healed, dry and hopeful. She is happy to be back to her old life again.
